SKILL Program

When: Wednesday, May 22, 2013 - 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM
Where: Adult Literacy Computer Room

This innovative program will provide practical training to immigrants about office environments, thereby broadening their number of future job opportunities and potentially increasing their future earnings.

The SKILL Program is a ten week program, set to run in the second quarter of 2013. It will include 10 weeks of classroom time, 2 hours per week, and is augmented by 100 hours of concurrent practice time, 10 hours per week. The practice portion is completed at area nonprofit organizations willing to host a program participant. An additional, the final session of the SKILL Program will be a graduation ceremony honoring participants, and presentation of certificates of completion.

Because the sessions will be conducted in English (with Spanish language support available), SKILL Program participants should understand and speak conversational English with decreasing hesitancy and difficulty, have basic reading comprehension and writing skills in English, and be able to function in an English-speaking environment with occasional support. Each session will include important vocabulary and key phrases, as well as learning activities to complete during the session and/or at home.

3. Computer Use & Creating and saving files

Art Exhibit Grand Opening Reception

Work by local art students ages 10 to 18 will be on display in Waukegan Public Library’s Gallery 128 starting June 1. The exhibition titled “Creative Light of Youth” consists of original artwork by students of local instructor Dr. Marco Antonio Cruz. An opening reception for the artists will be held on June 1 at 2 p.m. and is open to the public.

Born in Puebla City, Mexico, Dr. Cruz became obsessed with both art and singing at an early age and spent most of his youth sketching and studying architecture, human figure and nature. He explored a broad range of artistic styles before earning his Doctorate degree in Fine Arts from Suffield University. Dr. Cruz has won many awards throughout the years, including first place in a contest by the Chicago Yellow Pages Spanish Edition in 2005, which put his painting on the front cover.

Now Dr. Cruz is a private art instructor for both children and adults and has also taught at the Waukegan Park District, Jack Benny Center for the Arts, and the Xilin Lake County Chinese School at the College of Lake County. “I’m extremely proud of my students because all of them started without any previous art knowledge, and now the community can see their growth and creativity in painting different subjects with different techniques,” said Dr. Cruz.

“This exhibit allows the students to show their talents, feelings, emotions and skills,” said Cruz. “It is an activity that calls for dedication, experimentation, and rewards them with a heightened appreciation of the world around them. This is just the beginning for them on their journeys to become professional artists.” All of the students included in the exhibit have been taking classes with Dr. Cruz for about one year. The students included in the exhibit are: Daniela Santoyo, Jocelyn Montejo, Katarina Garcia, Juan Zuniga, Skylynn Medina, Zyanya Narvaez, Adriana Amador, Joselyn Duvon, and Andres Vences.

Pianist Jonathan Cruz will supply the background music for the reception. Cruz began studying music when he was 5 years old and has presented over 41 recitals over the years. He is graduating this year from Millikin University with a degree in commercial music and Spanish education.

“Creative Light of Youth” will be on display at the gallery through August 2. Gallery 128 serves as a dedicated exhibit space to showcase the talents of local artists in the library. To learn more about exhibit opportunities, call Rena Morrow at (847) 623-2041, ext. 231.
