Event Details

Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom HaShoah) 2014 begins the evening of Sunday, April 27 and ends the evening of Monday, April 28. In the historical novel, Departure, author Mary Ann Marger skillfully relates the life story of Konrad, who at a young age is faced with reconciling his Nazi indoctrination with his sensibilities, born of his close friendship with a Jewish family. His father, a high-ranking Nazi official, has plans for Konrad, who must courageously find a way to follow his convictions. As Konrad moves from boyhood to adulthood, through his military and religious schooling, as well as his marriage and career, the reader observes his intellectual development and experiences both his suffering and his triumphs along the way. Further completing the three-dimensional nature of this moving novel is an interwoven and integral subplot revolving around the three-paneled painting entitled "Departure" by German painter Max Beckmann, the interpretation of which has long been the subject of scholarly debate.
