Spring Lake Book Break Book Club - The Known World

Henry Townsend, a black farmer, boot maker, and former slave, has a fondness for Paradise Lost, and an unusual mentor— William Robbins, perhaps the most powerful man in antebellum Virginia's Manchester County. Under Robbins's tutelage, Henry becomes proprietor of his own plantation, as well as of his own slaves. Though he is a cruel master to his slaves, Robbins is desperately in love with a black woman and feels as much fondness for Henry as for his own children. Henry, meanwhile, reads Milton, but beats his slaves as readily as Robbins does. Henry's wife, Caldonia, is not as disciplined as her husband, and when he dies, his worst fears are realized: the plantation falls into chaos. Join us as we read The Known World by Edward P. Jones.

Author Joanna Catherine Scott: Beware: A Book Can Change Your Life! (Especially If You Wrote It)
Behind the writing of The Road from Chapel Hill and Child of the South

Scott was born during an air raid over London, raised in Australia, attended the University of Adelaide and took an undergraduate Honours degree in Philosophy; became a schoolteacher, married, gave birth to three children, lost her children in a divorce, came to North Carolina.

She obtained a masters degree in Philosophy from Duke, went to work for a consulting company that specialized in toxic and hazardous waste management and safety issues, and spent several years living in a truck stop motel in the swamps of Louisiana, flying in on Sunday evening, flying out on Friday; worked as a White House appointed Special Assistant for the National Emergency Preparedness Office of the Federal Emergency Management Agency in Washington, DC.

Scott then went to live in Manila, Philippines, and witnessed the Peoples Power Revolution and the demise of the Marcos regime; went to the Philippine Refugee Processing Center, which housed 17,000 souls from Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam who had fled Communist persecution in their homeland, and spent the next two years sitting in the dust with these people taking down their stories. From their stories her first book was born, Indochina’s Refugees: Oral Histories from Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam.

All of her books have been inspired by the true stories of the voiceless. She and her husband adopted three Korean orphans, came back to the US, and now live in Chapel Hill. Several years ago, she befriended one of the innocents on Death Row in Raleigh, a lonely African American young man the same age as one of her Australian sons. His story opened her eyes to the plight of the poor black man in our country, and the lack of justice available to him once he is entangled on our justice system.

Cliffdale Movie Night

Out steps a handsome and soft-spoken interplanetary traveler, played by Keanu Reeves, whose "bodyguard" is a huge robot. The traveler announces that he has a message for all humankind, which he will deliver only when the leaders of all nations agree to meet with him. When his demands are turned down, he arranges for the world to "stand still." He shuts down all of the electrical power in the world. This film is rated PG-13. Grammy-nominated Brian Morgan performs a variety of music on acoustic guitar, including jazz, R&B, funk and gospel. Morgan studied music education at North Carolina Central University under jazz trumpeter Donald Byrd. Also performing is a group he formed, 45 RPM, five young musicians/vocalists between the ages of 11 and 18 with an appreciation for good music, especially music from the 70s and 80s.
