Presented by John Voehl, one of the foremost Abraham Lincoln historians and presenters in the U.S., and life-time member of the Association of Lincoln Presenters, and Pamela Voehl as Mary Todd Lincoln. A question & answer period will follow the presentation.

Second Sunday Storyteller Series: Love Stories for a Winter Afternoon

Valentine Concert with 3 Boulder Storytellers: Kay Negash, Eric Patterson & Linda Batlin

As a valentine treat, stories of the season (the return of light!) from the Ancient Greeks and the Luhya of Central Africa (“Demeter and Persephone”, “The Girl Who Married the Sun” - which are also love stories) are told between tales of romance, ranging from the humorous/personal (“A Summer’s Love”) to the humorous/historical (“A Determined Lover,” a ghost story from the gold rush days) to Hans Christian Anderson’s “The Steadfast Tin Soldier” and “A Bridegroom for Miss Mouse,” a folktale from Burma.

Kay Negash is a nationally recognized storyteller & recording artist, the “first lady” of Boulder storytelling for almost 30 years. Her vast repertory of stories is heard regularly at CU’s Fiske Planetarium and the English Rose Tea Room at Chatfield Dam as well as at schools around the state.

Eric Patterson is a teller of tales in Boulder for the past 10 years. By using stories with authentic themes like peace, justice, and hope, Eric weaves alternative narratives to those prevailing in our culture: narratives focused on creating rather than destroying.

Linda Batlin’s stories of Colorado characters, especially those who inhabited her favorite higher elevations, are well-known to Boulder audiences for many years. She also brings back tales from her travels to far-off places around the world.

Go Club for Kids & Teens

Learn to play the ancient and mysterious board game known as Go. Developed 4000 years ago in China, the rules are so simple they can be taught in a few minutes--but it can take a lifetime to master the game. February 18: We will start on Gravity: An Introduction to Einstein's General Relativity by James B. Hartle. This is an undergraduate general relativity textbook, in the "physics first" style. It emphasizes the consequences of the theory and introduces math only as needed, although it does require at least two years of university level calculus.

Program Presentation: Bring the "History" Into Your Family History

Bring depth to your family history by exploring broader historical research techniques and thinking like an historian. Learn how to look beyond your ancestor’s basic statistics and examine what local history, social history, gender roles, and artifacts have to offer. Mona will present short case studies and show how you can enrich your family history by placing your ancestors into an historical context. This free program is cosponsored by the Boulder Public Library Foundation.

Mona Lambrecht switched gears on her graphic design career in 2001 and turned her genealogy hobby into a history degree. Specializing in researching history at the local level, Mona focuses on placing individuals and families into the historical context of their communities. Working primarily as an independent historian, genealogist, and lecturer, she recently published her first book, "Boulder: 1859-1919," a photography-based history of early Boulder, and is currently working on her next book project about Boulder photographer Joseph Sturtevant.

Recognizing the need for all Boulder Teens to have a voice, the Boulder Teen Advisory Board (BTAB) exists to provide a forum to represent teens’ interests impartially for the Boulder Public Library and the community. The goal of BTAB is to serve the needs of Boulder youth by employing a representative process.

Teens from different area schools meet monthly to organize teen library events, decide what will be added to the teen library collection and discuss ways to improve the lives of Boulder County teens.

Imagination Makers Theater Co. - One Life, Two Cultures - Pajama Party!

For a child, coming to the United States from another country can be exciting, heart wrenching and life changing.

“When I was waiting for our plane to the United States, I felt like a star exploding from excitement. All my life I had waited for this moment.”

Penned by Colorado student authors, amazing true stories and songs have been written in English and in the authors’ native languages. The young people originated in the countries of Mexico, Korea, Nepal, Russia, Ghana, China, and Bosnia. This dynamic multilingual production dramatizes inspiring tales of kids memories from their native countries, traveling to this country, and adapting to life in a new place.

“My dad and my mom did not have any money when we lived in Mexico. My father built a house with fabric and put a blanket on top as a roof. It was a very sad life for me.”

Audiences will cry for the hardships these young people have endured and laugh at their hilarious escapades. Whether by air or on foot, these journeys are a cacophony of confusing emotions. But one thing is for sure, these modern day immigrants will always have one life, but two cultures.

“But then I decided not to be sad anymore and began a new life here, with new friends new country with almost everything new. Now, I will just wait for what life has prepared for me.”

This special event, the only performance this year that is open to the public, will be followed by a milk & cookies reception with the actors. Be sure to wear your PJs!

Chronicles the painful months after the U.S.A. invasion of Iraq as experienced by Zubaida, an Iraqi exile who has lived in Berlin for nearly three decades. She struggles to hold on to her memories. As she absorbs the graphic details of the scenes leading up to the toppling of Hussein’s statue, she realizes that the gates to her homeland are now closed.

Lotte Reiniger (1899-1981) was cinema’s leading practitioner of silhouette animation, pioneering a distinctive style in her interpretations of classic myths, fairy tales and tales from The Thousand Nights and One Night. She moved from her native Germany to Switzerland and then the U.K. in 1935, becoming a British citizen in 1950. In the late 1970s she worked for the National Film Board of Canada. As Tomas said, "The world is most probably like some big hot air balloon.... I'd like to build my own hot air balloon. Then I would invite all sorts of people to have a feast in it. That's what my world is like."

This is a wonderful opportunity for people who would like to become more comfortable with art or writing. This workshop is meant for adults, so no young children please.

Women Avant-Garde Filmmakers
Maya Deren (1917-1961), born in Kiev, Russia came to the U.S. as Eleanora Derenkowsky with her first husband. She divorced, and in 1942 married Czech filmmaker Alexander Hammid. Together they worked on her first film Meshes of the Afternoon (1943) in which she cinematically manipulated time and space to achieve a blurring between dream and reality. (18 min.) She soon became know by some as “the mother of underground film” in the U.S. She was very active as a filmmaker in New York and was instrumental in establishing an underground film circuit there. In her later films, dance and magic figured prominently. Marie Menken (1910-1970) considered filmmaking an extension of painting and pioneered her form of cinematic collage and the translation of poetic possibilities into the language of cinema. She achieved these by way of a mastery of filmic rhythm through camera movement and editing. Notebook (1963) is an omnium-gatherum of filmic fragments that showcases many of her cinematic techniques. Silent. (10 min.) Carolee Schneemann is a multidisciplinary artist who has transformed the definition of art, especially discourse on the body, sexuality, and gender. The history of her work is characterized by research into archaic visual traditions, pleasure wrested from suppressive taboos, and the body of the artist in dynamic relationship with the social body. She has had painting, photography, performance art, installation works, films and videos shown at museums in the U.S. and Europe. She has also published widely. Plumbline (1968-72) depicts the dissolution of a relationship as it unravels through visual and aural equivalences. Schneemann splits and recomposes actions of the lovers in a streaming montage of disruptive permutations¯8 mm is printed as 16 mm, moving images freeze, frames recur and dissolve until the film bursts into flames, consuming its own substance.” Part II of Autobiographical Trilogy (Part I Fuses (1967); Part III Kitch's Last Meal (1973-78)). Sound by Carolee Schneemann. (18 min.) Leslie Thornton is a painter turned video- and filmmaker who teaches in the Modern Culture and Media Program at Brown University. Her lush, complex works explore the mechanisms of desire and meaning, while probing past the boundaries of language and narrative conventions. Difficult to categorize or describe, Thornton's works are steeped in theoretical interest and filled with rich and intuitive imagery in experimental narratives crossing science fiction, ethnographic, and documentary forms. Peggy and Fred In Hell (Prologue) reveals the abuses of history and innocence in the face of catastrophe, as it chronicles two small children journeying through a post-apocalyptic landscape to create their own world. Breaking genre restrictions, Thornton uses improvisation, planted quotes, archival footage and formless timeframes to confront the viewer's preconceptions of cause and effect. (21 min.) And that's just the beginning. Join us to paint, punch, glue, and slice as we re-envision discarded books as canvas, notepad, and home of hidden poems. Local writer and artist Ellen Orleans will demonstrate transparent image transfers, niche-cutting, boundary-breaking. We'll supply all you need, but if you have favorite images you want to add or magazines you want to sample, bring them along.

Diary of a Mad Housewife
Directed by Frank Perry, with Carrie Snodgress, Richard Benjamin, Frank Langella, Lorraine Cullen (1970). A bored New York housewife and mother feels trapped and isolated in her townhouse existence. Her husband is a money mad, social-climbing lawyer who ridicules her in front of their brat children. She begins an affair with a dashing, successful and blatantly sadistic writer who also torments her. Eventually she ends up in group therapy. Based on the novel by Sue Kaufman. Snodgress was nominated for an Oscar for her role as the mad housewife. (95 min.)
